Ander burst through the cabin door. The girls and Gabe jumped from their wicker chairs. Lacey had a towel wrapped around her head, drying her hair.
âThe fuck, man!â Gabe shouted.
Betsy stood; her creased brow told Ander she wasnât happy. âWhere the hell have you two been? I radioed Cole to keep an eye out and bring you back.â
Anderâs bare chest heaved as he stared at them, searching for the right words.
Liam hobbled in behind Ander and bent on his knees, taking big breaths. His damp hair stuck to his forehead. Liam reached for the closest bed and slowly sat on the floor, leaning his head back against the footboard.
Gabe looked from Ander to Liam. âDid you guys just hook up?â
Anderâs face twisted. âWhat? No!â
Gabe nodded slowly. âHmm, okay, so why are you shirtless? And why is he so out of breath?â
Laceyâs eyebrows piqued as if she was now wondering the same.
âLiam, I didnât know you were gay,â Gabe scoffed.
Liam took a deep breath. âIâmââ He exhaled. âPan, actually.â
Gabeâs forehead wrinkled. âPans are a sexuality now?â
Lacey groaned. âYouâre such an idiot.â
Anderâs heavy breath had calmed. âGuys,â Ander growled.
Gabe eyed Lacey over his shoulder. âHow the hell am I supposed to know?â
Betsy clapped twice. âHey! Can everyone stop talking?â She stepped away from the chairs and moved to the center of the room to look at Ander lingering by the front door. âYou still didnât answer me. Where were you?â
Ander stared at Betsy, and he swallowed hard. âJerryâs dead.â
Kate gasped.
Lacey covered her mouth with both hands. âOh, my God.â
Gabeâs laugh shot from his mouth as he bent at the waist. âWow, thatâs dark. If you guys were hooking up, itâs fine. No one cares. You donât have to say someone's dead.â
Liam pushed himself to his feet. âWe werenât hooking up. Anderâs telling the truth.â
Gabe leaned on the arm of his chair. He pointed to Liam. âDid you see it, too?â
Liam glanced at Ander and then shook his head. âNo. but there were all theseâ ââ
âAhhh, okay!â Gabe said, leaning back in his chair and putting his feet on the small tree trunk table. âSo once again, we just have to take Anderâs word for it? Weird that heâs the only one seeing things around here.â
Betsy's lips pursed. âI really canât tell if youâre joking, Ander.â
Ander rolled his eyes and let out a groan. âWhy would I joke about this? I saw someone in the woods at the lake, and now this. Jerry was pinned to the shed door. His face was all messed up,â Ander said with a rattling voice. âThere were flies everywhere, too. It was disgusting.â Anderâs eyes widened. âI touched those flies. OhmyGod, ohmyGod!â Ander sprinted for the bathroom and twisted the water on. He snatched the bar of soap shaped like a pine tree and scrubbed his palms.
Lacey stood and paced by her bed, unwrapping the towel from her hair. âI want to go home. This is freaking me out. I donât want to be here anymore.â She dropped the towel, bent to grab her small suitcase from under the bed, and plopped it on the mattress.
